Brazilian, 1918-1992
Born in Bauru, state of São Paulo, in 1918, she was the daughter of Nicolau Assis, a Lebanese trader and Salma Nahas, a Syrian housewife. Alice married Tufy Kanji with whom she had two children: Milton, a geologist and flutist, and Ricardo, a conductor and classical music composer.
According to Milton, Alice dedicated her life to taking care of the home and family. She liked music and literature and although she played the piano, it was in photography that she was able to vent her creativity. In 1951 Alice Kanji joined the Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante to accompany her husband. Still according to the children's testimony, Tufy was in charge of the Club's studio, where he produced portraits, and Alice would help him in the preparation of the models.
In a short time, Alice started her own trajectory that lasted a little over thirty years, having been very active until the beginning of the 1980s. In the Club's Boletim it is possible to follow part of her activities through her participation in Art Salons and exhibitions. Alice Kanji continued to photograph and attend to the Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante even after Tufy's death, but she was forced to interrupt her activities in the second half of the 1980s, due to limitations resulting from a neurological disease.
