At this year’s The Photography Show presented by AIPAD(May 20-22, 2022), UTÓPICA gallery will exhibit two award-winning series by the Brazilian photographer Lalo de Almeida: Amazonian Dystopia (2022 World Press Photo and 2021 W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant) and Ashes from paradise (2021 World Press Photo). Photographs that are urgent as they not only shed light on the destruction of nature, but also the genocide of the peoples of the forest. At May 21, 2-5 pm, the audience is invited to “Meet the Photographer”, for Lalo will be on site at Utópica’s booth allowing the public to get a direct conversation about his work. Presently, both series can be visited virtually on the gallery website at the online exhibition "Humankind X Nature".
Utópica also highlights works by renowned Brazilian photographers which the international audience has had only few chances to appreciate. Among them Alice Kanji, Barbara Mors and Dulce Carneiro. The three women photographers, that together with Annemarie Heinrich (german-argentine photographer), were part of the exhibitions from Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante and remembered at the “Three authors from a gentler sex”, an exhibition and publication from Utopica Gallery at 2020, that challenged the audience to question how those photographers incredible work were long ignored or diminished by the media, that once referred to them as authors from a weaker gender.
Adenor Gondim, Arnaldo Florence, Celso Brandão, Fernando Lemos, German Lorca and José Yalenti will also be presented at Utopica’s booth. For more information on these photographers, please check our website or contact gallery staff.
